TARK was founded in April 1991 and registered on 16 May 1991, making it Estonia’s longest continuously operating independent law firm. For 35 years, TARK has remained active without merging with any other firm, a distinction that reflects both our stability and our commitment to independence.

A Track Record Built on Landmark Work

From Estonia’s earliest post-independence years, TARK has been at the centre of the country’s most significant legal and economic developments. The firm played a key role in several of Estonia’s largest privatisation processes, including the privatisations of Marat, Flora, Püssi Puitplaatide Tehas, Leibur, Kalev, Eesti Telefon, and Norma, among other major companies.

When Estonian families affected by the MS Estonia ferry disaster needed representation in negotiations with Swedish insurer Skuld, TARK was there — helping secure the compensation they deserved.

Our lawyers have advised on some of the most consequential cross-border transactions in the region, including the sale of Hansabank to Swedbank and the sale of Norma to global automotive safety leader Autoliv Inc. We have also advised Microsoft, McDonald’s, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and many other international companies on investments and corporate matters in Estonia.

TARK’s founder, Aare Tark, has advised government authorities and state-owned enterprises in Estonia, the United States, and Israel. He successfully represented the Government of Estonia before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington and served as Chairman of the Estonian Bar Association from 1994 to 2001.

Recognised Excellence

TARK and its lawyers have been consistently recognised by leading international legal directories for outstanding professional work, repeatedly ranked among the top law firms in the Baltics and named the best law firm in the region.

What We Do Today

TARK continues to handle complex disputes and advises on mergers, acquisitions, and corporate restructurings across Estonia and the Baltics. We have built a growing practice supporting start-ups and technology companies on fundraising, governance, and intellectual property — while maintaining our long-standing strength in representing international companies in corporate matters and protecting their rights across the region.

Baltic and European Reach

TARK cooperates with many leading European law firms. We also hold a Baltic-wide cooperation agreement with Latvian firm Skrastins & Dzenis and Lithuanian firm Motieka, enabling seamless cross-border service across all three Baltic states.

TARK extends its heartfelt thanks to every client, cooperation partner, advocate, lawyer, and support team member who has been part of our story and of shaping the legal field alongside us!
